What to be aware of? › › ›
If you are using your own wheelchair, inform your airline about the dimensions and weight of the wheelchair. If you are using an electric wheelchair, please specify the battery types when making your reservation. Gel and dry batteries can stay in the wheelchair, but must be secured and disconnected before checking in. The poles may also have to be insulated. Special terms of carriage apply for wet batteries, as these are classified as hazardous goods. Please enquire accordingly directly with your airline.
Dogs accompanying those with reduced mobility are very welcome at the airport, but, of course, they must remain on the lead. If your dog is to accompany you on your trip, please enquire in advance with your airline about the conditions for taking them with you, as strict quarantine regulations could affect your dog entering your country of destination. You should ask your airline in good time before your trip, whether or not your wishes can also be considered with your reservation.
The Federal Police use the most modern control technology at Hannover Airport. People with pacemakers, prostheses or similar can, however, also be checked without the use of a sensor on request. Please contact the staff on duty at the control point. A certificate will make the check easier.
There are various international abbreviations that will help you to classify the assistance you require in categories and which you can also find in your reservation, if you have specified the requirement for support when making your reservation:
WCHR: Wheelchair Ramp. The passenger only requires the wheelchair to bridge lengthier passageways; climbing stairs alone is possible.
WCHS: Wheelchair Steps. The passenger cannot climb stairs, but short stretches on foot are possible.
WCHC: Wheelchair Carry. The passenger always requires a wheelchair, cannot move in the cabin without help from another person, and brings their own wheelchair with them.
BLND: The passenger is blind or sight-impaired and would like assistance on request during the trip.
DEAF: The passenger is deaf, hearing-impaired or deaf and cannot speak and would like assistance on request during the trip.
BLND/DEAF: The passenger is deaf and blind and must be assisted during the trip.
