The colossal importance of the environment issue in the companies is illustrated by the handling of environmental matters directly by the respective management level.

The following graphic clearly shows the value of the EMS, which has developed over the year from dealing with classic environmental topics through to a company-wide strategically set up management system.

Hannover Airport’s environmental issues are dealt with throughout the entire company. The basis for this is provided by strategic focusing and specific processing of environmental topics. These are specified, checked and updated every year in the strategies of the individual company areas.

The integration of environmental issues into project management is another important management tool. This guarantees that environmental protection is also important with new projects.

But relevant environmental topics aren’t just dealt with internally; in-house defined procurement regulations, for example, are also applied when commissioning external companies.

We, Flughafen Hannover-Langenhagen GmbH, are very much aware of our effect on the environment. In view of this awareness we have formulated an environmental policy that describes the key points of our precautionary environmental protection activities.

Environmental protection as part of our corporate strategy

We reduce the environmental stress caused by the operation of Hannover Airport as much as possible and actively ensure that we are thrifty and sparing in our use of raw materials, energy, water and all other resources. At the same time we also implement measures early on to reduce air and noise emissions. We invest in the use of renewable energy and apply the best possible technology available with new investments.

Legal specifications as the minimum requirement

We believe legal regulations for environmental protection are the minimum requirement that we must meet and must continually further develop on our own initiative.

Process for continuous improvement

We document and monitor the effects of our activities on the environment, in order to pinpoint vulnerabilities and derive improvement options from these. These are then implemented and checked regularly as concrete objectives and measures.

Communication with the public

We maintain an open dialog with the public and provide environmentally relevant information. We work closely with official authorities, association and other institutions on a trusting and confident basis.

Motivation for environmentally responsible behavior

We motivate our employees, customers, suppliers and contractual partners to be and behave environmentally responsible. We incorporate all environmental criteria into our procurement procedures. We inform and train our employees in operational environmental protection. Our employees can submit improvement suggestions for environmental protection via the company’s suggestion scheme or directly via the environmental management officer.

The activities of Hannover Airport’s companies involved in the EMS produce effects on the environment that must be reduced as much as possible.

Environmental aspects are the component parts of activities, products or services of the companies, which have or can have effects on the environment. The term “environmental effects” describes a positive or negative change in the environment, which is completely or partially attributable to the companies’ activities, products or services.

A difference is basically made between direct and indirect environmental aspects.

Direct environmental aspects are, for example, waste generation or water consumption. There are produced as a direct result of the companies’ activity and can be influenced by it.

Indirect environmental aspects are produced indirectly by the companies’ activities, without their having any effective scope of influence. Indirect environmental aspects are produced, for example, by the air traffic or behavior of visitors or suppliers.

All environmental aspects cannot be always differentiated as direct or indirect environmental aspects. It is far more critical that all important environmental aspects of the organizations be recorded and evaluated. Continuous objectives and activities are developed in this respect to reduce the respective environmental effects.
