In the summer we offer extra nice flow both in the mountains, in the bike park and the roads not to mention our vast forest that offers a fantastic varied experience mile for mile. No holiday is complete without a walk in the mountains under blue summer skies, or when the autumn has coloured the landscape in reds and yellows. If you want a real challenge you can follow the 90 km walking trail along the route of the Vasaloppet ski race.

An easy and convenient way to start your walk in the mountains is to take the chair lift up to the top, and then choose where to go from there. All out trails are well signed, with red crosses, so it’s easy to find your way.

If you have a pram with you, try taking an invigorating walk on our two-kilometre-long asphalt path along the beautiful Södra Kungsleden.

There are many fish-filled waters here so you can enjoy many different types of fishing. Challenge the pike in one of the lakes or fish for grayling and salomon trout in the mighty Västerdalälven river. Our experienced fishing guides will show you the best fishing waters so that you can catch something extra special to serve for dinner.

Glide gently down the children’s slopes or the gentle green pistes, and start by taking the button lift up if you’re here to learn. Test one of the children’s favourite areas – Trollskogen, the magic forest – or take your new snowboard to one of our parks and try a 360°. There are plenty of challenges: Väggen – the Wall – which is as steep as it sounds and has Sälenfjällen’s greatest vertical drop at 370 metres, or you can have a go at telemark skiing.

When your legs are tired and the children are hungry, there are plenty of cosy restaurants and picnic huts in which to refuel. You can enjoy everything from your own packed lunch and cocoa to goulash soup, waffles and à la carte.

Sälenfjällen is home to, and the start of, the world’s oldest, longest and biggest ski marathon – Vasaloppet. Every year, 80,000 people cover the 90 km between Sälen and Mora on cross-country skis. But you don’t need to be a long-distance skier to enjoy cross-country skiing in our trails. We have 250 kilometres of groomed trails, from short child-friendly ones in forests to longer excursions in the mountains.

Naturally, we also have a cross-country skiing school that will help you train away the wobbles and improve your speed and technique.
Nothing tastes as good as when you’re eating your picnic, sitting on a sleeping mat beside a mountain stream on a sunny spring day. Or you can take a break in the waffle hut after a few kilometres in the cross-country skiing trails, and enjoy waffles with cloudberry jam, cream and a cup of coffee.

Traveling by dogsled across snowy mountains is an incredible experience, providing lasting memories. There are all sorts of dogsled trips – short, long, or a multi-day trip where you travel for long distances, spending the night in a kåta with a wood burning stove as the only source of heat.

Naturally, there’s a child-friendly version where they travel in a sledge behind real sled dogs. The dogs are kept on a lead and move forward at a safe pace.

In the summer, the sled dogs have time off, while longing for another winter season in the harness. This is when you can rent your favourite dogs and take them for a walk in the mountains.

A snowmobile is one of the most conventient forms of mountain transport. Driving a snowmobile through the mountains on a cold and sunny winter day is an experience for young and old alike.

We have more than 400 km of snowmobile trails to choose from when you want to go for a ride. Buy a one-day trail permit – or why not for the entire season – and then all you have to do is pick and choose among the mountains, deep ravines and marshes.

There are also large areas for games and fun where off-trail driving is permitted. And, of course, children can have a go at driving themselves around a mini-snowmobile course.

If you want to experience the mountains from a snowmobile in a more organised manner, perhaps a guided tour with a lunch cooked outdoors appeals to you.

Our beauteful canoe runs vary in difficulty and length. If you´re looking for excitement and adventure then you sholud choose the Görälven and Fulan rivers, which demand that you have your wits about you! If you want something more relaxing then you can glide slowly, peacefully and more-or-less silently down the mighty Västerdalälven river. You can count on the fact that your journey will be filled with exciting sights, and the chances are that you will see wildlife such as elk, beavers, roe deer, foxes and, if you´re lucky, bears and lynxes

Midsummer is one of the region´s biggest and most beuteful celebrations. It is the time when the warm summer nights are longest and the delightful bluebells, ox-eye daisies and crane´s bills fill the summer meadows, The swallows fly high in the sky, and herring, fresh potatoes and strawberries are served in the lilac garden. Celebrate a traditional Midsummer Eve and all it has to offer in Malung, Sälen, Lima, Rörbäcksnäs and Sörsjön. Join us in our Midsummer festivities, where the maypole is erected, the folk costumes are colourful, the folk music is captivating and dancing is irresistible, for old and young alike!

Gammelgården’s restaurant focusing on game has become a popular classic far beyond the Sälen area. Served here are wonderfully well composed meals based on game birds, fish and venison from the north of Sweden. Our chef searches the larder of nature and blends these treasures with locally produced ingredients. Inspiration and outside influences are important which means that the guest performances are both recurrent and appreciated. The result is famous, widely appreciated and the dream for game lovers.

Vasaloppet is the world’s oldest, longest and biggest cross-country ski race. It has a rich history and tradition; hundreds of thousands of skiers have tackled the 90 km stretch from Sälen to Mora since the start in 1922. Rigorous training and careful preparation is needed to complete this 90 km challenge. It is a race with classic technique along a magical landscape, followed by two million television viewers in Sweden alone. Now is the time to rise to the challenge!

Midsummer is one of the region´s biggest and most beuteful celebrations. The hostel offers 12 rooms, 45 beds. The kitchen, bathrooms and showers are for sharing.
The house is ideal for gruops. We have a sauna and if you feel like it we will heat the outside hot tub for you. Dark winterevenings, or mild summernights when the sun never goes down are very cosy and relaxing to spend outside by the open fire in the windsheild where we can put on a cup of coffee for you.
Let us know and we will make you breakfast. Waffles are always included and are very appreciated. We are close to the ski slopes in the Sälen mountains and to the slopes in Trysil, Norway. It´s only a 50 minutes drive! The snowmobile trail is just outside the house.
If you enjoy go fishing you have plenty of possibilities to either fish in the rivers or in one of all the small lakes.
Hiking for a day or staying over night is a ”must do” over the summer. We will help you with maps, dropping off and picking up. We can even come with you and give you the guided tour in the mountains. We also give fly fishing classes. We are in the hostel at all times to help you with anything you need, maps, fishing license, suggestions and tips on what to see and do.
We have two canoes for rental. Either we take you upstream and drop you off and pick you up later on, or why not just go for a tour in the nearby lake Horrmundsjön where there also is a swimming place.

We never place people from different families in the same bedrooms. The kids have their own playroom and in the summers a playarea outside. We have a launge with Television and wireless internet. Summertime we have a café with homebaked swedish ”fika”.

In winter, we offer half board and breakfast, in summertime, week; 26 - 32, we have waffles and coffee.
You can rent room for one or several days in the two Annex, if you are a bigger group of people maybe "rent the hole house" with kitchen and commomroom suit you the best. Sälsäterns Fjällgård Hostel also offers cottages.

Sälen Bike Park is 300 meters away from us.
Experium, that includes water slide and Sweden's first indoor surfvåg, is also within walking distance.
