Tax refund shopping / VAT refunds
Take advantage of this opportunity: you can shop in Germany and then reclaim the tax when you leave the European Union (EU).
As a non-EU tourist you can save up to 12.6%*. Make the most of it!
Buy from shops that display the Tax refund logo, and ask for the relevant Tax refund check or voucher (your name, street address, passport number and country must be filled in by the dealer or in the presence of the dealer).
Please note: The original invoice or cash receipt must remain attached to the check or voucher of the relevant vendor.
When you leave the EU, first report to customs.
For air travelers:
If you have your purchases in your luggage:
a) If you are simultaneously leaving Germany and the EU, or if your flight has a stopover in another EU country but your luggage will be checked through to your final destination:
- First go to the customs desk in arrivals Terminal B and declare your purchases there. You will then get the appropriate customs stamp on your check.
- At the Tax refund counter (open 6am to 9pm) in the Airport Service Center (arrivals Terminal B) you can have your certificated rebate paid out in cash.
- Please then go to the airline counter to check in.
If you are leaving Germany but plan to stay in another EU country, you can get a customs stamp only at the EU airport from which you finally leave the EU. At that time you should proceed as described above under a).
b) If you have your purchases in your hand luggage:
You can get a customs stamp for articles in your hand luggage from the German customs counter only if you are immediately leaving the territory of the EU.
If you will be continuing to travel within the EU, even for a brief stopover, you can get customs stamps for articles in your hand luggage only at your last airport before leaving the EU. At that EU airport the Tax refund counter will reimburse you for the VAT.
All airport payment offices will give you your refund immediately in cash. If you prefer to have the refund on your credit card, this is naturally also possible.
* Average rounded refund amount with processing fees already deducted.
